Tripura Ready for Assembly Polls: Chief Electoral Officer

AGARTALA: The polling booths are scheduled to open early tomorrow morning across the state of Tripura on Thursday and all the associated people are in full preparation to ensure the smooth conduct of the polling process.

The Chief Electoral Officer of the state of Tripura, Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarro earlier announced that all the preparations are complete and the state is ready to hold the assembly elections.

The voting process for the 60-seat Tripura Assembly will begin at 7 AM across the polling stations and get over by 4 PM on February 15. A total of 3337 polling stations have been set up across the 60 constituencies of the state. Out of that number, 28 have been identified as critical and 1100 as sensitive. A total of 259 candidates will be contesting for the 60 seats, out of which 20 are women. The state has a total of 28.13 lakh voters, out of which 13.53 lakh are women.

"As many as 31,000 polling personnel and 25,000 security personnel of central forces are ready to conduct the election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. Besides, 31,000 employees of the state armed police and the state police will be deployed to maintain law and order," mentioned the Chief Electoral Officer.

The state had also seen a record number of security personnel deployed to prevent untoward incidents. More than 43000 security personnel from different agencies were deployed in the state for the peaceful conduct of the election process.

This election is expected to be a triangular contest between the previously ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) led coalition and the local TIPRA Motha.

As a part of the precautions, a prohibitory order has been imposed in the state which will be in force till 6 AM in February 17 to prevent trouble mongers from the states of Assam or Mizoram or the neighbouring Bangladesh from entering the state.

BJP is contesting in 55 seats, and its ally IPFT has fielded candidates in 6 constituencies with a friendly contest on one seat. CPI(M) is contesting in 47 seats while its alliance partner Congress is fighting in 13 constituencies. TIPRA Motha has candidates in 42 seats. TMC has also given candidates for 28 seats and 58 are contesting independently.
